What are embedded systems?

“An embedded system is a controller with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system, often with real-time computing constraints. It is embedded as part of a complete device often including hardware and mechanical parts. Embedded systems control many devices in common use today”
Anything that has a computer based circuit for a dedicated purpose we can class as an embedded system.
Therefore a PIC microcontroller is an embedded system when used with other devices as part of a larger control system.
I can develop embedded systems ranging from simple PIC based or larger systems using embedded Linux.
What to choose
PIC family microcontrollers have a very large selection of mid range to high end 32 bit chips but I never use the low end chips, the 16F is the minimum I will use.
Above all, remember always use the best for the job. Therefore I will consider PIC, Teensy, or an embedded platform such as the Beaglebone or Raspberry Pi.
